Well - I’m sitting in the airport as I write this, finishing up a 1 month long stint just outside of San Francisco in Santa Clara. It’s been a very productive trip and I look forward to finally getting to put some things in action once I return to Atlanta. Some of the most notable items from this trip are future opportunities and a few revisions to some existing systems I have been doing for awhile; I’ll detail most of that in a future post once I’ve had more time to really make use of them.
As far as an overall opinion of the trip and location; if you’re out here trying to break into the world of Web 2.0, it’s a great place to be… Everywhere you read on the web, it seems everyone who’s anyone is located out here. One of the guys I find quite intriguing to keep up with, is Tim Ferris, author of the Four Hour Work Week. His blog, here, is typically full of interesting tidbits of information for those looking to do this more efficiently. Now, all opinions of his approach aside, there’s a few gems here and there. Well, he’s based out here. YCombinator, the seed funding company that specializes in turning ideas into companies; they’re located out here. It seems everywhere you turn, there’s something else popping up out here. So if you’re an entrepreneur trying to break into the wide world of Web 2.0, you’re more than likely going to want to make a few connections out here.
From a scenic perspective the Valley area has a lot to offer. I was 2ish hours from Napa Valley, 4 hours from Yosemite and countless hours of driving through the mountains. Plus, there’s San Francisco 20 minutes from Santa Clara. We spent a few days in San Francisco; quite an interesting experience. From Live Jazz and overpriced Quail to being interviewed by Jay Leno on the street, it was a blast. Chinatown was also a lot of fun and from my aimless wandering around the city outside Chinatown, I found quite a lot of niche boutiques for great gifts that I’m looking forward to giving people when I return home.
Overall though, the city itself is very enjoyable to visit. I couldn’t live here due to some of my own personal preferences, but it’s a fantastic place to visit. One of the most enjoyable experiences for me though were my countless hours spent in coffee shops working on provisional patent documentation, some behind the scenes development work I’ll be showcasing in a month or so, integrating a few new tools into my daily routine (more to come on that soon!) and just watching the unique demographic of people that are part of the California experience.
I’m looking forward to my week back in Atlanta, then it’s on to Broomfield, CO (just N of Denver) for 2 weeks and then back to Santa Clara, CA for a week. Let’s see what I can accomplish during my week back to the real world!
